AVENUE PLAY THERAPY
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHAT IS A PLAY THERAPIST?
A Play Therapist is a professional with a postgraduate degree Masters in Child Play Therapy, trained in children’s development and clinical practice, and a member of the Australasia Pacific Play Therapy Association (APPTA).
The use of therapeutic skills is necessary to engage in change and shifts in children’s play at different stages of their development.
The Play Therapist supports the child in developing play skills that will help them build resilience and well-being through play.
WHAT HAPPENS IN A PLAY SESSION?
The Play Therapist engages in an individual session with the child, allowing them to express themselves.
In the play session, the child directs the play, and the therapist follows the child’s lead. Creating a space for the child to lead play provides them opportunities to problem-solve, explore, learn and grow.
The session is structured to help the child know what will happen in the session. The duration of the session is approximately 50 minutes.
HOW CAN PLAY THERAPY HELP?
Play Therapy, as an approach to early intervention, emphasises warm, accepting and supportive therapeutic relationships.
Play therapy is, at times, a medium to longer-term intervention and promotes independence in play. Following the child’s lead creates an environment in which the child is in control, predictable, and safe.
When positive interactions occur, the child’s brain stress response regulates, helping to create a positive state of being.
IS IT OK TO ASK ABOUT THEIR PLAY SESSION?
Not asking or checking with your child what they did in the play therapy session is important. Play therapy is a confidential space for the child to engage in play and also a space for them to process and explore feelings, thoughts and actions.
I will share any concerns I have that are important for the family to be aware of as soon as possible.
